Debby
« on: August 04, 2024, 06:34:11 PM »
So which way is she going? Will she head north through Myrtle Beach, Georgetown, Charleston; (once it exits the mainland of Florida/Georgia) or will she go back the way she came as the GFS has indicated very persistently? It doesn't appear it will become a Hurricane again once it exits the mainland into the Atlantic, (if it even goes off-shore) since it is getting the squeeze out there. Coastal SC could get 20 inches of rain if the system stalls out for a few days.

Latest sweep of models shows Debby going way west towards Sumter and Charlotte.

I just cleaned out my Stratus for the incoming remnants.

I was out of town for Debbie. When I got back the the Stratus was quite full. The Davis gauge said 6.02. So when I went to to start pouring out the outer tube but it slipped from my hand and fell on the ground.
I went with 5.75. The new Davis tends to be over on its readings so I thought that was a good compromise.
Still pissed me off I did that. First time that ever happened. I'll be ready for the next hurricane. BOTH hands this time.

Here in east-central North Carolina my VP2 with the original tipping device (not the spoon) measured 4.51" and my Stratus 4.89" for Debby. Since 2005, in Florida, Virginia, and now North Carolina, my VP2 has generally recorded 10-15% less than the CoCoRaHS gauge during the heaviest rainfall rates.

A definite bummer to have dropped the Stratus :-x. I've only done that once over the years!

My results prove why one never compare their data to a neighbour's, even one yard over.

My VP2 which runs very close to Stratus in moderate steady rain, and are supposedly notorious for under reporting in heavy rain, yesterday showed 1.81.

The Stratus filled 1.10.

They are 20 feet apart.

The 1.81 is in line with several other reporting stations. Seems average for the area with smaller and larger extremes reported too.

I'm going to move the Stratus onto the ISS post. Been thinking about it for a while.

That is how I have mine set up, on the same post.
The new gauge never under reports but always over reports. Sometimes its right on in moderate rains while other times not. Right or wrong  I use it as a gauge to look at but always record the stratus as the official total.

For hurricane Milton I held the outer cylinder with 2 hands and no spillage.
Woohoo!
