Ecowitt Wittboy GW2000 data volume
« on: September 17, 2024, 01:56:20 AM »
Hello,

I am in the process of setting up a Wittboy weather station in a remote location where it will connect to the internet via a 4G router with a limited data plan of only 50 MB per month. Back of the envelope calculation showed this ought to be plenty for reporting data every 10 to 15 minutes. At first I set this up to deliver data to wunderground and was surprised when it had exhausted the data plan after less than 2 days. So back to the drawing board. I have since connected the Wittboy through my home router, where I can measure its throughput. At standard 5-minute intervals to wunderground, it used appr. 250 KB per hour or appr. 6 MB per day. I then tried switching to it to report to Ecowitt.net every 10 minutes and was initially rewarded with a throughput of appr. 11 KB per hour - quite close to my initial estimate. I left it running in order to get a more complete picture after 24 hours. It turns out that after running at the 11 KB/h rate for about 10 hours, it suddenly started using over 100 KB per hour and has remained at that level since.

Anyone have an idea about what's going on here - why it didn't remain at the very reasonable ~11 KB/h rate? Any other experience that may help guide me?

Thanks a lot!

/ Thorsten
