I tried the official Acurite method and also the one described in the link, but never manged to get the rainfall to match with my manual measurements (within +/-5% error margin). In the end, I calibrated my aws based on manual rain measurements, just adjusted the calibration screws up or down (half turn or quarter turn on both the screws uniformly) as required. It took me three/four rain events to get it right. Of-course, to do this you will need a precision manual rain gauge, I used a Stratus rain gauge for this purpose. It has been 5/6 years since my last calibration, the rainfall value is still holding good.
